Gloves not cut quite right

I have quite small hands for an adult man, but I found the size 8 (M) did not fit me adequately. The gloves were tight across the knucke of the index finger, when gripping a tool. I bought some size 9 (L) in the same order and these work for me. Good value for money, but would be very good with a slightly better cutting pattern.
